# Value Proposition Canvas Worksheet

> Maps your buyer's real pains and gains directly to your messaging, so every pitch answers why us and why now before a single sentence is written.

Free framework for sales reps. Topic: [Sales Content, Playbooks & Battlecards](https://www.peerlab.ai/library/topic/sales-content-playbooks-battlecards/). Published by PeerLab in the [Sales Enablement Resource Library](https://www.peerlab.ai/library/). Source: https://www.peerlab.ai/library/value-proposition-canvas-worksheet/

## How to use it

Complete Part 1 using only real buyer language pulled from recent calls or win/loss interviews, complete Part 2 about your offer, run the Fit Test, then use the Fit Statement formula as the backbone of your next pitch, deck, or landing page headline.

## What's inside

- Customer Profile block: Jobs, Pains, Gains (with definitions and prompts for each)
- Value Map block: Products/Services, Pain Relievers, Gain Creators
- Fit-testing method: mapping each Pain Reliever/Gain Creator to a specific Pain/Gain
- Pain ranking scale (severe/moderate/minor) and Gain ranking scale (essential/expected/desired)
- The Fit Statement formula that turns the completed canvas into your core message
- Worked example for a full canvas
- Red-flag checklist, signs your canvas doesn't actually fit
- Instructions for running this as a 45-minute team workshop

*Every pitch should answer “why us, why now” before it's written, this is where that answer comes from.*

---

## Part 1: Customer Profile (fill this in first, about your buyer, with zero mention of your product)

### Jobs, what is your buyer actually trying to get done?
(Functional tasks, social pressures, and emotional needs, not your product's category.)

- Functional job: ________________________
- Social job (how they want to be seen doing it): ________________________
- Emotional job (how they want to feel doing it): ________________________

### Pains: what gets in the way, annoys them, or risks failure?
List each pain and rank it:

| Pain | Rank (Severe / Moderate / Minor) |
|---|---|
| | |
| | |
| | |

### Gains, what outcomes or benefits would delight them?
List each gain and rank it:

| Gain | Rank (Essential / Expected / Desired) |
|---|---|
| | |
| | |
| | |

---

## Part 2: Value Map (fill this in second, about your offer)

### Products/Services, what do you actually offer? (list, no adjectives)
- ________________________
- ________________________

### Pain Relievers, how specifically does each product/service kill a listed pain?

| Pain Reliever | Which Pain (from Part 1) does it kill? |
|---|---|
| | |
| | |

### Gain Creators, how specifically does each product/service produce a listed gain?

| Gain Creator | Which Gain (from Part 1) does it produce? |
|---|---|
| | |
| | |

---

## Part 3, Fit Test

Go line by line. For every Pain Reliever and Gain Creator, ask: does this map to a Pain or Gain ranked Severe/Essential? If a Pain Reliever only addresses a Minor pain, it belongs in your feature list, not your pitch. If a Severe pain has no Pain Reliever mapped to it, you have a gap, either build one or don't claim fit in that area.

**Fit ratio** = (Pain Relievers mapped to Severe pains + Gain Creators mapped to Essential gains) ÷ (Total Pain Relievers + Total Gain Creators)

A fit ratio under 50% means your messaging is currently built around things your buyer doesn't rank as urgent.

---

## Part 4: The Fit Statement Formula

Once the canvas is complete, assemble your core message:

> “For [buyer/Job], who struggle with [top Severe Pain], [Product/Service] provides [top Pain Reliever], which means [outcome tied to top Essential Gain]: unlike [alternative/status quo], which [why the alternative fails to relieve that pain].”

---

## Worked Example: Mid-market payroll software, sold to Finance Directors

**Jobs:** Functional, close payroll accurately every cycle. Social, be seen as the person finance trusts with compliance. Emotional, not dread the last week of every month.

**Pains:** Manual reconciliation errors (Severe). Late filings triggering penalties (Severe). Spreadsheet version confusion across sites (Moderate).

**Gains:** Same-day close (Essential). Audit trail with zero manual work (Essential). Nicer UI (Desired).

**Value Map, Pain Relievers:** Automated multi-site reconciliation → kills manual reconciliation errors. Built-in filing deadline engine → kills late filing penalties.

**Value Map, Gain Creators:** One-click close report → produces same-day close. Auto-generated audit log → produces zero-manual-work audit trail.

**Fit Statement:**
> “For Finance Directors who struggle with reconciliation errors across multiple sites, [Product] provides automated multi-site reconciliation, which means a same-day close with zero manual audit prep: unlike spreadsheet-based processes, which surface errors only after the filing deadline has already passed.”

---

## Red-Flag Checklist: your canvas doesn't actually fit if:

- [ ] More than half your Pain Relievers map to Minor pains
- [ ] You can't name a single Essential gain your product produces
- [ ] Your Fit Statement reads the same with a competitor's name swapped in
- [ ] You had to guess at Jobs/Pains/Gains rather than pull them from real buyer conversations
- [ ] The canvas was built by marketing/product alone with zero rep or customer input

## Running This as a 45-Minute Workshop

- 0:00–0:10: Individually, each rep lists Jobs/Pains/Gains from their last 3 real deals (no product talk allowed).
- 0:10–0:20: Combine and rank as a group; resolve disagreements by majority vote, not seniority.
- 0:20–0:35, Map Pain Relievers and Gain Creators together; challenge every mapping that looks like a stretch.
- 0:35–0:45: Draft the Fit Statement as a group, read it aloud, and pressure-test it against the red-flag checklist.
