## How to use it

Use this to build or prune your enablement dashboard: every metric on it should pass the 'so what' test at the bottom, and every leading metric should be paired with the lagging metric it's supposed to move.

## What's inside

- 8 metrics that matter, each with its formula
- 5 vanity metrics to stop reporting, with why they mislead
- The 'so what' test for deciding whether a metric belongs on a dashboard
- Ramp time, certification pass rate, and skill retention formulas
- Coaching cadence adherence and win-rate lift formulas
- Guidance on pairing every leading metric with a lagging one

## Metrics that matter

| Metric | Formula | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| **Ramp time to full productivity** | Date of first full-quota-attainment month − start date | Directly measures whether onboarding/enablement compresses time-to-value |
| **Certification pass rate** | Reps passing on first attempt ÷ total reps attempting | A low first-attempt rate means the certification bar or the training that precedes it is miscalibrated |
| **Skill retention (90-day)** | Assessment score at 90 days post-training ÷ score immediately post-training | Training that doesn't stick is a cost, not an investment, this is the number that tells you |
| **Coaching cadence adherence** | Scheduled 1:1 coaching sessions actually held ÷ scheduled | Coaching that doesn't happen on cadence doesn't compound, this is a leading indicator for everything else |
| **% of reps at Proficient+ per competency** | Reps scoring Proficient or above (e.g., 20+/32 on a skill module) ÷ total reps | Tells you where the org-wide skill gaps actually are, competency by competency |
| **Win-rate lift** | (Post-intervention win rate − pre-intervention win rate) ÷ pre-intervention win rate | Isolates the effect of an enablement intervention on the metric that ultimately matters |
| **Time-to-first-deal** | Date of first closed-won ÷ start date | A ramp sub-metric that catches problems earlier than full-quota-attainment does |
| **Content/practice utilization rate** | Reps actively using an enablement asset in the 30 days before a stage change ÷ total reps in that stage | Distinguishes assets that are actually used from ones that are just published |

## Vanity metrics: stop leading with these

| Metric | Why it misleads |
|---|---|
| **Training completion / attendance rate** | Measures presence, not skill change. A 100% completion rate with 0% behavior change is a failed program reported as a success. |
| **# of content pieces published** | Volume isn't value. Ties enablement's worth to output, not outcome. |
| **Single-session NPS/satisfaction score** | Reps can enjoy a session that changes nothing about how they sell. Satisfaction ≠ skill transfer. |
| **Total LMS logins** | A vanity proxy for engagement that says nothing about whether anyone learned or applied anything. |
| **# of certifications issued** | Meaningless without the pass-rate context (see above), issuing certifications isn't the same as raising the bar. |

## The "so what" test

Before any metric goes on your dashboard, ask: **"If this moved 10%, would revenue, retention, or ramp speed move with it?"**

- If yes: keep it, and pair it with the lagging metric it's supposed to influence (e.g., pair coaching cadence adherence with win-rate lift).
- If no, cut it. It's decoration, not a dashboard.
