# Sales Confidence Self-Assessment

> A scored self-assessment across six core selling skills that separates a real competence gap from a confidence gap, so you know whether to train the skill or just get more reps of it.

## How to use it

Score all six areas honestly using your actual last 10-15 calls as evidence (not vibes), plot each on the table, and work on only the lowest-scoring one or two areas at a time rather than everything at once.

## What's inside

- 6 core skill areas, each scored on 2 separate axes: Evidence and Feeling
- Exact evidence-question wording per skill area (cold outreach, discovery, objections, pricing, closing, exec conversations)
- 1-5 scoring anchors for both the Evidence and Feeling axes
- A 4-quadrant interpretation table (confidence gap / blind spot / real skill gap / strength)
- A specific recommended action for each quadrant combination
- Guidance for reading your overall pattern across all 6 areas

### Are you actually under-skilled, or just under-confident?

Most reps treat "I feel shaky doing X" as proof they need more training. Sometimes that's true. Just as often, the skill is already there and what's missing is reps: actual volume of doing the thing while feeling the fear, until the fear stops being useful data. This assessment scores **evidence** (what you can actually point to) separately from **feeling** (how confident you feel), across six core skill areas, so you know which lever to pull.

## How to score each skill area
For each of the 6 areas below, answer both questions on a 1–5 scale.

**Evidence question**: score based on what you can actually point to in your last 10–15 calls (not how you feel about it):
1 = Rarely/never happens · 3 = Happens about half the time · 5 = Happens consistently, I could show you the recording

**Feeling question**: score based on how you feel *before or during* the moment, honestly:
1 = Dread/avoid it if I can · 3 = Neutral, do it because I have to · 5 = Genuinely comfortable, don't think twice

### 1. Cold outreach / prospecting
- Evidence: "In my last 15 cold touches, how often did I get to a real qualifying conversation (not just a voicemail or brush-off)?"
- Feeling: "How much do I dread sitting down to prospect?"

### 2. Discovery questioning
- Evidence: "In my last 10 discovery calls, how often did I uncover a specific, quantified pain point before I started pitching?"
- Feeling: "How confident do I feel asking a fourth or fifth follow-up question instead of moving on?"

### 3. Objection handling
- Evidence: "When a real objection comes up, how often do I address the actual concern rather than reciting a rebuttal?"
- Feeling: "How much does my stomach drop when I hear an objection coming?"

### 4. Negotiating / holding price
- Evidence: "In my last 5 pricing conversations, how often did I hold the number without being the first to offer a discount?"
- Feeling: "How confident do I feel saying the price out loud and then staying silent?"

### 5. Asking for the close
- Evidence: "In my last 10 qualified conversations, how often did I explicitly ask for next steps or a decision, out loud?"
- Feeling: "How much do I avoid or soften the ask because it feels pushy?"

### 6. Executive-level conversations
- Evidence: "In my last 5 conversations with a VP+ title, how often did I keep my structure and questions the same as with any other buyer?"
- Feeling: "How much does the title on the invite change how nervous I feel walking in?"

## Scoring your gap per skill area
For each of the six areas, plot Evidence vs. Feeling:

| Evidence | Feeling | What this means | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| High (4–5) | Low (1–2) | **Confidence gap**: the skill is there, the feeling hasn't caught up | Don't train the skill again: get more reps of it while paying attention to the evidence, not the feeling. Ask a manager or peer to confirm the evidence score is accurate; often it's higher than you think. |
| Low (1–2) | High (4–5) | **Blind spot / overconfidence**: dangerous, because nothing is pushing you to improve | Get recorded and reviewed by someone else, your self-read is off. This is the quadrant most likely to be invisible to you alone. |
| Low (1–2) | Low (1–2) | **Real skill gap**: feeling and evidence agree, and both say "not there yet" | This is genuine training need: role-play reps, shadowing, structured coaching on this specific skill, not just "do it more." |
| High (4–5) | High (4–5) | **Strength** | Nothing to fix: consider mentoring someone else in this area, teaching solidifies it further. |

## Reading your overall pattern
- **If most areas are Evidence-High / Feeling-Low:** you're a stronger seller than your internal narrative gives you credit for. The fix is exposure and reps, not more courses.
- **If most areas are Evidence-Low / Feeling-Low:** this is an honest, fixable skill-building phase, pick the single lowest-scoring area and drill only that one for two weeks before moving to the next.
- **If any area is Evidence-Low / Feeling-High:** flag this to your manager directly and ask for a recorded call review, this is the one combination you cannot self-diagnose accurately.
