# Objection Handling Matrix Template

> A fill-in spreadsheet template that maps every objection your team hears to its category, root cause, and one agreed-upon response, so reps stop freelancing answers in the moment.

Free template for sales managers. Topic: [Objection Handling](https://www.peerlab.ai/library/topic/objection-handling/). Published by PeerLab in the [Sales Enablement Resource Library](https://www.peerlab.ai/library/). Source: https://www.peerlab.ai/library/objection-handling-matrix-template/

## How to use it

Run the included 90-minute workshop process with your team to populate the matrix from real call recordings, assign an owner to each row, and refresh it quarterly.

## What's inside

- A ready-to-fill matrix with 8 columns: objection, category, root cause, response, proof point, escalation trigger, owner, review date
- 3 fully worked example rows to model from (price, status-quo, procrastination)
- A 5-step workshop process for populating it as a team from real call recordings
- Field-by-field definitions so every rep fills it in consistently
- Guidance on quarterly review cadence and row ownership
- Ties directly to the 7 Objection Types taxonomy for consistent categorization

A living document your team fills in together so every rep hears the same "approved" response to the same objection, instead of freelancing in the moment. Run this as a 90-minute team workshop: pull real objections from call recordings, sort them, and assign an approved response and owner to each.

---

## How to Run the Workshop

1. Pull 15-20 verbatim objections from recent call recordings or CRM notes (not paraphrased, actual words used).
2. Sort each into one of the 7 objection categories (see *The 7 Objection Types Every Rep Must Recognize* framework: Price, Timing, Authority, Need, Trust, Competition, Procrastination).
3. For each, debate and agree on ONE approved response as a team, not five competing versions.
4. Assign an owner responsible for updating that row as the market/product changes.
5. Review and refresh the matrix quarterly, or immediately after a new competitor move or pricing change.

## The Matrix

| Objection (verbatim) | Category | Root Cause | Approved Response / Word-Track | Proof Point to Attach | Escalation Trigger | Owner | Last Reviewed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| "It's too expensive" | Price | Value not yet proven relative to number | "Too expensive compared to what, budget or value seen so far?" | ROI calculator / cost-savings case study | Prospect asks for >15% off list | [Name] | [Date] |
| "We're happy with our current vendor" | Trust / Status Quo | Visible switching cost > invisible staying cost | "Happy at a 9-10, or a 7 nobody's questioned?" | Benchmark/audit offer, comparison sheet | Prospect refuses any benchmark | [Name] | [Date] |
| "I need to think about it" | Procrastination | Unresolved sub-objection (price/approval/fit) | "What specifically do you want to think through?" | None, diagnostic only | Prospect goes silent >5 business days | [Name] | [Date] |
| "We're also evaluating [Competitor]" | Competition | Genuine multi-vendor evaluation | See Competitor Battlecard for [Competitor] | Battlecard + win/loss reference | Prospect requests direct bake-off/RFP | [Name] | [Date] |

## Field Definitions

- **Objection (verbatim):** the exact words a prospect used, not your interpretation of what they meant.
- **Category:** one of the 7 objection types (Price, Timing, Authority, Need, Trust, Competition, Procrastination).
- **Root Cause:** the underlying driver behind the surface phrasing, this is what the response should actually target.
- **Approved Response:** the single word-track the whole team uses, agreed on together, not five competing versions.
- **Proof Point to Attach:** the specific asset (case study, calculator, battlecard, reference) that backs up the response.
- **Escalation Trigger:** the condition under which a rep should loop in a manager or sales engineer rather than handle it solo.
- **Owner:** whoever is accountable for keeping that row accurate as the market changes.
- **Last Reviewed:** date of last update, stale rows get flagged at the next quarterly refresh.
