# Commission Statement Decoder

> A line-by-line walkthrough of every field on a typical commission statement, so you can catch payout errors yourself instead of assuming finance got it right.

Free guide for sales reps. Topic: [Comp, Quota, Territory & Capacity Planning](https://www.peerlab.ai/library/topic/comp-quota-territory-capacity-planning/). ## How to use it

Run the verification routine against your own statement every pay period before assuming it's correct, and if you find a discrepancy, escalate using the exact format in the last section rather than a general complaint.

## What's inside

- Definitions of all 12 standard line items found on most comp statements
- A fully annotated sample statement showing every field filled in with real numbers
- The 5 most common statement errors and the exact math check that catches each one
- How to reconcile a clawback/reversal line against the original deal it references
- How prior-period true-ups work and why they can shift a current statement's total
- A step-by-step verification routine to run before you ever flag a dispute
- What to include when you do need to escalate a discrepancy to finance/RevOps

## The 12 standard line items

| Field | What it means |
|---|---|
| **Base/Draw** | Guaranteed pay for the period, separate from commission, may be a true draw (recoverable against future commission) or a non-recoverable base |
| **Commissionable Revenue** | The subset of booked revenue that actually counts toward commission, check for exclusions (e.g. services, discounts, certain product lines) |
| **Commission Rate** | The % applied to commissionable revenue at your current attainment tier |
| **Tier/Accelerator Adjustment** | Extra amount from crossing an accelerator threshold mid-period (see OTE Calculator for the math) |
| **SPIFs/Bonuses** | One-time incentive payouts tied to a specific promoted behavior or product, separate from standard commission |
| **Clawback/Reversal** | A deduction for revenue previously paid on that has since been refunded, cancelled, or fell outside the clawback window (e.g. customer churned inside 90 days) |
| **Prior-Period True-Up** | A correction for a previous statement: could be additional pay owed (deal booked late) or a deduction (an error caught after the fact) |
| **Draw Recovery** | If your base is a recoverable draw, this line deducts previously advanced draw amounts from current commission earned |
| **YTD Attainment %** | Your cumulative attainment against annual quota, used to confirm which tier/accelerator applies |
| **Gross Commission** | Total commission before any deductions |
| **Net Payout** | What actually hits your bank account this period: Gross Commission + SPIFs + True-Ups − Clawbacks − Draw Recovery |
| **Payment Date** | When this statement's amount is actually disbursed, which may lag the period it covers by 15–30 days |

## Annotated sample statement

```
Pay Period: June 2026
Base/Draw: $5,000
Commissionable Revenue: $180,000
Commission Rate (tier applied: 100–110% attainment): 8%
Gross Commission: $180,000 × 8% = $14,400
Accelerator Adjustment: +$1,200
 (portion of revenue above 100% threshold paid at 12% instead of 8%:
 $30,000 × (12%−8%) = $1,200)
SPIF: New Logo Bonus (2 qualifying deals): +$1,000
Clawback: Acme Corp cancellation (booked March, cancelled May,
 inside 90-day window): −$2,400
Prior-Period True-Up (May statement missed 1 deal, added late): +$640
Draw Recovery: −$0 (non-recoverable base this plan)
Net Payout = $14,400 + $1,200 + $1,000 − $2,400 + $640 − $0
 = $14,840
```

## The 5 most common errors, and the check that catches each

| Error | How to catch it |
|---|---|
| Wrong commission rate applied (tier misread) | Recalculate your YTD attainment % yourself from your own CRM data and confirm which tier it actually falls in |
| Deal excluded that should be commissionable | Cross-check your own closed-won list against the Commissionable Revenue line, every closed deal should appear somewhere |
| Clawback applied outside the contractual window | Check the clawback line's referenced deal date against your plan's actual clawback window (commonly 60–120 days), a clawback for a deal older than the window is invalid |
| Accelerator calculated on full revenue instead of only the portion above threshold | Redo the accelerator math using the step-by-step method in the OTE Calculator, this is the single most common statement error |
| SPIF omitted or miscounted | Compare the SPIF line's deal count against your own tracking of qualifying deals for that specific promotion |

---

## Reconciling a clawback

1. Find the deal name/ID referenced on the clawback line
2. Confirm the original commission date you were paid on it
3. Confirm the cancellation/refund date from your CRM or the customer's actual cancellation
4. Calculate the days between: if it exceeds your plan's clawback window, the deduction is invalid: escalate

---

## Verification routine (run before you dispute anything)

- [ ] Recalculate Gross Commission from your own Commissionable Revenue and confirmed tier rate
- [ ] Recalculate any Accelerator Adjustment using the above-threshold-only method
- [ ] Cross-check every SPIF against your own qualifying-deal list
- [ ] Cross-check every Clawback's date against the plan's clawback window
- [ ] Add up your own Net Payout and compare to the statement's stated total
- [ ] Only escalate if your recalculated total differs from theirs

---

## What to include when escalating to Finance/RevOps

- The specific line item in question
- Your recalculated number and the exact formula/data you used
- Supporting evidence (CRM screenshot, deal ID, close date)
- The dollar difference between their number and yours

A specific, math-shown dispute gets resolved in days. "My statement looks wrong" gets queued behind everyone else's vague disputes.
